Our objective is to reduce the risks to all road users of accidents and their associated consequences of injury or death.

 

Much of the current unacceptably high casualty rate at junctions is caused by road users being forced, due to a lack of relevant information, to 'best guess' a dynamic situation and simply getting it wrong.

This is a situation that is unlikely to improve of it's own accord because it's a basic human characteristic - we ALL make honest mistakes when acting on insufficient information!

This 'honest mistake' must not be confused with negligence, which is overlooking or ignoring information, this vital information is simply NOT there to be considered!

 

Road users who accidentally miss a single occurrence of an important road sign, such as a No Entry or a One Way sign that is difficult or impossible to view, will often find themselves in a life threatening situation that may not be apparent until it's too late!

By providing a new method of indicating traffic flows that are hazardous we have a means of dramatically cutting the accident and casualty rates on our roads.


TRAFFIC LIGHT CONTROLLED JUNCTIONS

By introducing a NEW type of light signal that has a running sequence of amber lights that are 'active' only when the hazard of oncoming traffic is present, it is possible to give road users a HIGHLY VISIBLE indicator to assist them in making decisions as to when it is safest to undertake manoeuvres such as turning right at a junction.

These new 'Safety Flow signals' would be fitted to the existing traffic light columns, just below the standard light units, and integrated into the standard traffic light sequence. They would be visible to both approaching AND vulnerable traffic WITHIN the junction.

No more guesswork - Just Clear Information - With Safety Flowsignals you can clearly see that there is an oncoming traffic hazard.

When Flowsignals would be deployed

At all light controlled junctions where there is bi-directional traffic and vehicles are in competition for the road space.
The Flow signals would be deployed to warn the traffic lane that has to 'give way', of the oncoming hazard.

E.g. Deployment at a Light controlled T junction. Two Flowsignals would be required.

Other optional uses:

In city centres to provide additional information for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. The signals will show clearly which lanes are free to go.

Where vehicles are 'blind' once they go past the line as they cannot see their own signals. Box junctions etc.

Features:
  • Illumination pattern 'mimics' traffic flow. The 'Top' to 'Bottom' running light sequence is instinctive at suggesting something travelling TOWARDS you.

  • Amber colour lamps are used as the Flowsignal is a warning signal.

  • Square lamps cannot be confused with round traffic light displays.

  • Each lamp will be 3 in (75mm) square, large enough to be clearly seen by drivers with normal eyesight for driving.

  • Light signals are universal and not dependent upon the reading or language skills required by a written sign.

  • Clear lenses that do not appear 'illuminated' by low Sun or headlights, makes signal state more obvious.
  • Small cross section minimises 'projection' from column, low risk of passing vehicles damaging units.

  • Robust construction from vandal resistant materials.

  • LED light sources, long life and low power requirement.

  • Light weight, does not require any reinforcing of existing installations.

  • Triggered by existing traffic light phases, no need for additional control gear or cabling.

  • High reliability MTBF 20 years.

  • Connects directly to the traffic signals of the lamp post on which it is mounted. Parallel connections across the red, yellow and green traffic signal lamps provides power and control signaling.

  • Light sensor will automatically adjust light output levels of the signal to suit ambient lighting conditions.


ONE WAY STREETS

By introducing a NEW type of light signal that has a running sequence of red lights that are visible only to traffic travelling AGAINST the permitted direction of travel, it is possible to give road users a HIGHLY VISIBLE indicator that they are in error and at risk.

These new 'Safety Flow signals' would be fitted to the BACK of existing road sign columns, facing away from the normal traffic flow.

This is a simulation of the way in which 'Safety Flowsignals'
would function on a typical one way street.

Deployment of Flow signals

Flowsignals would be deployed at any location within a one way system or on any part of the public highway at which traffic is only permitted in one direction e.g., motorway slipway, filter lane. Installations would be made at any location where a safety risk assessment has identified the need or in response to an accident or dangerous occurrence.

Features:

  • Illumination pattern 'mimics' traffic flow. The 'Top' to 'Bottom' running light sequence is instinctive at suggesting something travelling TOWARDS you.

  • Red colour lamps are used as the Flowsignal is a 'danger' signal to warn that the road ahead is not the permitted direction of travel.

  • Narrow lamp lens angle allows the signals to be clearly focused on the road area only.

  • The changing light display is eye-catching and therefore far more easily noticed than any fixed sign would be.

  • Option to have the Flowsignal normally deactivated and to incorporate directional movement sensors to activate units only when vehicles are travelling against the permitted direction of travel.

  • Clear lenses that do not appear 'illuminated' by low Sun or headlights, makes signal state more obvious.
  • Small cross section minimises 'projection' from column, low risk of passing vehicles damaging units.

  • Robust construction from vandal resistant materials.

  • LED light sources, long life and low power requirement.

  • Light weight, does not require any reinforcing of existing installations.

  • High reliability MTBF 20 years.

  • Connects directly into the luminaire power supply when mounted on the back of an existing one way sign.

  • Light sensor will automatically adjust light output levels of the signal to suit ambient lighting conditions.


NO ENTRY SIGNS

By utilising the NEW type of HIGHLY VISIBLE light signal that has a running sequence of red lights it is possible to draw road users attention to the fact that by entering a road they are about to violate a NO ENTRY and will be travelling AGAINST the permitted traffic flow.

These new 'Safety Flowsignals' would be fitted to the FRONT of existing road sign columns, facing approaching traffic.

Even in circumstances of poor visibility, this simulation shows how 'Safety Flowsignals' could provide vital information.

Not all accidental oversights of No Entry signs lead to serious risk, therefore deployment need only be done on sites where the risk of serious accidents are deemed high enough from a risk assessment or from historically high accident rates.

For example:
Motorway exit slip road - Possible (2) x Multiple fatality (5) =10. Conclusion, fit a 'Safety Flowsignal'
Local shops service road - Possible (2) x Minor injury (2) = 4. Conclusion, not necessary.

Overall risk rating: <6 indicates a low risk, between 6 - 15 a medium risk, >15 a high risk.

  • Option to incorporate proximity sensors to deactivate units when no vehicles are within range, to limit unnecessary light pollution/annoyance in sensitive areas such as residential streets.

  • Connects directly into the luminaire power supply when mounted on the front of an existing no entry sign.

  • Light sensor will automatically adjust light output levels of the signal to suit ambient lighting conditions.

* Conventional signs only register when they are looked at directly, as the eye's ability to recognise colours and objects outside of the central area of vision (about a 40 degree angle) is limited. Our peripheral vision, which covers a much wider angle (around 180 degrees), is very sensitive to movement. Flowsignals have the advantage that their simple animated light pattern can not only be seen, but also recognised in this peripheral vision.


THE TECHNOLOGY

'Safety Flowsignals' is the name we have given to this new form of road signaling, derived from the fact that it's purpose is to alert road users to the HAZARDS of traffic FLOWS travelling toward them!

The novel concept of providing traffic signals that inform road users of oncoming traffic flow hazard is the subject of a patent application.

A leading UK design consultancy with past design experience of road traffic signals was commissioned to bring the concept to the manufacturing stage. The design concept was done on the basis of both retro fitting to existing installations and incorporation into new installations.

All of the technologies necessary for manufacturing and installation are already well established and proven, no 'new technology' unknowns to contend with.

Production volume capacity is in place ready to fulfil orders.
